Busboys&Poets and the Smithsonian Craftshow

I've tried to go to Busboys & Poets (Link: www.busboysandpoets.com) for as long as I've been in DC. My friend Marlena, who now goes to UMD studying to be a journalist (check out her work: umdwritersbloc.wordpress.com/2012/04/19/changing-careers-for-the-love-of-poetry/), suggested Busboys when I visited her at UMD in February. I was surprised to find that there four locations: two in DC, one in Maryland and one in Virginia. Unfortunately our plans fell through on Friday night to visit the Hyattsville Busboys for the Talent show due to the most stupidest and weird bus schedule which ended mid-afternoon. WHAT?!?! That's Maryland for you...

Change of plans we rescheduled to meet at Busboys on 5th & K St Saturday for the Youth Open Mic. It was so great. I loved seeing so many young adults and even younger children expressing themselves and exposing their beautiful talents. Art is important and for most of these kids its an escape from the harsh realities they must live with. Here was a community of all types of people, young, old, black, white, asian, indian, handicapped, healthy, sick, everyone coming out in the mist of a storm to hear and support art.

Older youth featured artists: rapper and Spanish guitarist (he played Led Zeppelin's "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You"!!!)

The food was as good as they say. Try the chicken salad on challah bread and the pomegranate lemonade :)

I did work a lot during the morning and afternoon on Saturday but it always seems like I'm so distracted these days. Its so hard for me to focus and concentrate on my work when there are so many other things I'd rather be doing that will enhance and enriched my DC experience. Why can't we have the option to have a meeting with our program directors and explain all there is to discuss regarding all the events, activities and work done during our internship? I much rather do that in one fell swoop than worry about a freakin portfolio that...oh btw WE have to pay for the "binding" and paper, etc. BS!

Sunday I gave blood around 1030am and later went to the National Building Museum to visit Tom's (Daddio) sister Carol Snyder. She is an amazing ceramics artist (Link: www.smithsoniancraftshow.org/images5/Ceramics_Snyder.htm) and I'm glad I made an appearance because there was a tons of innovative and such modern designs that I recognized would not be presented in your typically arts & craft show. This was a legit show, apparently one of the harder shows to get into so go Carol! Check out her personal website: carolsnyder.artspan.com

By Carol Snyder - She told me that for this piece her inspiration came from the corn fields during the winter season and the top serrated perameter represents the tops of trees as you look out into a field or farm in Ohio
Thought this was cool - glass craved into balls of yarn

I was truly awed and impressed by the magnificent ascetics of the building. The museum exhibits were in rooms along the perimeter of the building on all three floors. It was such a relaxing experience walking around the building. See for yourself

DC United

Went to the DC United vs Montreal game on Wednesday night this week. It was so sweet to FINALLY go to a sports game. I went with my TWC colleague Kristi. Hopeful for no down pour did us good because we didn't get rained out. It was my first futbol game in years. But DAMN the beer was expensive $8 per domestic beer. The audience was very animated and cheering so loud they literally shook the seats. Here are some photos of the event:

Botanic Gardens (Part 2)

Follow up from last weekend during Keith's visit: We went to the Botanic Gardens for wonderful photo-opportunity for Mr. Photographer. It was so great even with the humidity and heat inside the exhibits. So many orchids!! The many many different kinds of orchids were in honor of the Japanese Cherry Blossom festival (Mar 20-April 27). Take a look for yourself:

I took some photos too! I love the gardens! It made me realize that the gardens could be a great place to study or write in my journal (yes I keep a journal). The atmosphere is peaceful and the benches are all in very secluded areas. I would love to go back but we'll have to see.

At the Zoo :)

As if it wasn't sweet enough to have my long-time friend Keith over for the weekend he came up with a few terrific ideas for "things to do" while he was in town. One was going to the National Zoo. What a great idea! I planned to go last month but after hearing from a close colleague that the animals weren't out yet I decided to wait. Good thing I did because we were EXTREMELY lucky! We saw the Giant pandas - my first time seeing pandas EVER - and of course the elephants!!! We also got to see a feeding for the sloth bear. Note: the sloth bear is not related to the sloth the animal although it does share some mechanical and physical attributes.

Below are some photos of the trip to the Zoo all taken by my semi-professional friend Keith Hobin. Be sure to check out his flickr account (link:www.flickr.com/photos/kjhobin/)

Of course my favorite - and I know my Mom would just love me saying this - was the bird section. They are the animals that can do the one thing we as humans never will be able to do on our own: fly. Not to mention the beautiful feathers and designs of their beaks, etc. All so different and so many of them. Take a look for yourself below, some of my favorite picks from Keith's bird photos:

A stop at FroYo for "lunch" and off to MLK and FDR memorials. Funny thing was its been awhile since I've been around my guy friends and I forget their stomachs. So what I considered lunch was a snack in Keith's eyes. It was an on-going joke between him and I especially when he used the phrase 'you eat like a bird' which always brings a smile to my face. My Mom always says that not to be mean but to say its amazing that I can keep going and going and going with barely enough energy in me. However, I am a very healthy person and in order to stay that way I traditionally only eat healthy foods - not greasy, fatty foods - and exercise a lot! But to be honest I do forget to eat sometimes because I'm so absorbed in the activities I do throughout the day.

We tried to go to the Botanic Gardens but I failed us. Instead we went to the Castle Smithsonian that did have gardens but not the Botanic Gardens. We killed some time going into the African Art and Asian Art Galleries nearby which were very well done. Some photos are below:

At the end of the day we managed to get to The Kennedy Center to see Ten-Chi-Jin, a rockish Japanese band, in celebration of the Japanese Sakuri Maturi Festival taken place in Federal Triangle early on Saturday. It started out slow and painfully quiet. The dancer was beautifully wrapped in a kimono and it was lovely to see her move in traditional Japanese dance, however, we were very tired and that wasn't the kind of music to keep our attention - hence Keith almost tipping over and a gentleman in the row behind us started to snore loudly. The performance did get more exciting once the rest of the assemble came onto the stage and the female drummer, Shinobu Osawa, started to jump around with her drum and run through the audience thanking them for the support. What a great performer!

The night ended with a few Dubliner beers, London Broil and Cornbeef and cabbage at the Dubliner Pub. It was definitely a good night for the Capitals fans hanging out at Kelly's Irish Pub right down the street which was very entertaining. I would go as far to say it was like dinner and a movie only it was real and live right in front of me. Shuttle back to the RAF and sleep....

Will be writing up Part 2 of our adventures soon. Stay tuned!
